Picture 485...

Writer's picture: JaredJared

Hi there.

Before we get started, I’m hungry.

I don’t know what I want.

I’ll just make a simple sandwich.

Quick and easy.

Would you like one?

TOO BAD!

You didn’t give me my money from last week.

You don’t get a sandwich.

You get nothing.

You lose.

GOOD DAY, SIR!

*flies away in a glass elevator*

Speaking of the glass elevator, time for a rant.

Look at this…

That’s from the movie… with the glass elevator.

That doesn’t look like glass to me…

Am I the only one seeing this?

That’s not glass…

It looks like a……

….flying…..

…… cookie jar.

I don’t know.

Anyways.

Today is a spooky day.

BOO!

Did I scare you?

What about this video?

WAS THAT SPOOKY?!?!?!

DID YOU FEEL THE SPOOKINESS?!?!?

That’s actually the opening for the BTS video of this project.

That doll was just sitting in the basement of a house.

Off in the corner….

Watching…..

Waiting…

Then….

HA!

I GOT YOU!

You’ve been spooked.

ANYWAYS!

To celebrate this spooky day, I present to you this spooky photo…

AHHHH!

So dark.

So moody.

So mysterious.

It’s been raining for about 7483 years.

Ok, maybe not.

But it feels like it.

Rainy day after rainy day.

For a week… or two.

AT LEAST IT’S NOT SNOW….

……………….for now.

On one of those rainy nights, I was driving.

I kept looking at the rain under the street lights.

I haven’t done a proper rain photo.

Maybe a rainy window, but not me out in the rain.

So, that was my goal.

I wanted a rainy photo.

BUT HOW?!?!?

My cameras aren’t waterproof except for the GoPro.

I would need a way to attach an umbrella and all this nonsense.

It was too much work.

But then I thought….

What if…. It wasn’t raining?

This is the magic of photography…

Not everything has to be real.

You can use simple tricks to make it look like it’s raining.

Just like the movies.

The one rule was that it had to be real.

I’m not going to cheat and slappy a rainy overlay over a photo of me.

No.

It had to be practical.

All in camera.

BUT HOW!??!!

Well, they invented this lovely thing 400 years ago called….

A garden hose.

WOW!

The effect is simple.

I’m over here, the camera is over there, and the hose is spraying between us.

SIMPLE!

I had the camera far back and zoomed in.

This causes the depth in the photo to flatten.

So it looks like the water is falling on me, but it was about two feet away.

I stayed dry the whole time!

There was almost an accident.

The stand holding the hose fell over.

Almost sprayed the camera.

And the sad part was that the BTS camera wasn’t recording.

The battery died.

So this moment wasn’t captured.

I was sad.

The photo took many tries to get right.

This was the long exposure part of this project.

So, I wanted the rain to be streaking across the photo.

I kept trying and trying.

10-second exposure, 3-second exposure, having the rain be backlit by an extra light, so on.

I eventually go to what I thought was the best photo.

Which is usually the last one that I shoot.

However, after looking at it on the computer the rain was too bright…

See…

It looked fine on my little camera screen.

Luckily, I had a previous take where the rain was too dark.

And with the power of camera raw, I was about to make the rain brighter.

Other than that, it was a simple edit.

I wanted high contrast moodiness.

So, I cranked contrast and clarity up to 9000.

There was a version where I had the highlights really bright.

This was to aid in the high contrast look and feel.

But it didn’t work.

The rain was too bright again.

So, I dialed it back and got to the final version of the photo.

COMPARE!

Hover your mouse (the computer one) over the original picture to see the changes I did.

If you're on a touchscreen device, just tap on the picture. You may have to tap more than once.

I love it!

When I think of a photo idea, I see the photo in my head.

Then, I do my best to replicate what I’ve foreseen in my mind.

Sometimes I’m right on target and other times I miss the mark.

For this photo, I create EXACTLY what I had in mind.

This is what I saw.

It’s perfect.

As I was typing up this post, I was thinking of how I could make this photo more spooky.

So, I present… the alternate version…

BLOOD!

BLOOD IS RAINING FROM THE SKY!

IT’S DARK!

IT’S EVIL!!

I LOVE IT!

I wanted to get this post and photo out yesterday.

And then today, I would have put this version up as a temporary photo.

But I was so drained yesterday.

I passed out at 7pm, woke up at midnight, went back to sleep, and didn’t get up until 10am.

That’s 15 hours of sleep, y’all.

I haven’t been sleeping right the past few days and it finally caught up with me.

I feel great now!

I’m going to try to get the video finished.

I have everything in the timeline and it’s at 18 hours.

I’ve been shuffling things around and trimming things down.

There were some contest videos that I removed.

I’ll put those in the next project when it’s time for the contest.

It’ll all be down in a week or two.

I’ll go for next Thursday.

That’s been when I post the final photo of this series and the video.

COME BACK THEN!
